So I’m standing in the elevator minding my own business when I look up on the screen and see this “news” item titled:
“Yes, But is it art?”
I’m intrigued so I read on, thinking It’d be about some wonky performance art or something….
And it is.
The blurb said:
36 year old Brooklyn performance artist to give birth in her gallery show.
I had to reread it. But it really said that.
So this woman is going to be giving birth to a crowd of people in a gallery space, in lieu of hanging up paintings and whatnot.
I looked around the elevator at the other people reading the screen thinking Am I the only person who finds this absolutely crazy?
The blurb went on to say: 15 people have signed up to watch.
Now, from what I understand about gallery shows here in our city is, you pay for the gallery space and hope to recoup your money when your art is sold. I am shocked that anyone would pay to watch this bloody, messy, baby, placenta and possibly poop, leave this chick and splash all over the floor…but apparently 15 people are game.
And the planner in me wants to know: what birth besides a c-section runs on schedule? Seriously. The 15 onlookers are going to be standing around for HOURS waiting on this baby. I hope she serves snacks….more than just wine and cheese. How on earth does she plan to schedule this? And God forbid, what if something goes awry? I mean… Really? Maybe she’s a psychic performance artist.
My opinion: This “performance artist” needs better friends in her life. Someone to tell her, no sweetie, this is not a good idea, let’s think this through.
Would you give birth as an “art” installment? Do you consider this art? Would you go watch?
