As you read this I’m probably knee deep in clothes, toys and junk, trying to orchestrate some semblance of organization while packing, and wrangling my tornadobaby. Thankfully I have friends like Raven who is willing to guest post here so I can get stuff done while still offering you something worthwhile to read at OKDani. Enjoy her post and I’ll talk to you tomorrow!
Are you giving your resolutions the slow fade?
Can you believe that we’re already half-way through January 2014!?! A couple weeks ago, we were all
summing up 2013 and making big promises about what life would be like, what WE would be like in
2014. So…how’s that going for you?
Did you resolve that 2014 would be the year that you launch a new career, go back to school, start
(or ramp up) that new business, or maybe pack your bags and move far, far away? Those are all nice
dreams; big leaps of faith. But, in the words of Langston Hughes “What happens to a dream deferred?”
If your dream only exists as an idea in your head or thoughts in your journal, what good is it doing you?
You have got to take action.
I would bet that this isn’t the first time that your New Year’s Resolutions and goals have gotten lost in
the shuffle of everyday life. In fact, I’d double that bet that your goals for 2014 have been on the list
Here are my two favorite ways to breathe life back into my goals and go from lost to LAUNCHED.
Understand the Why
It’s not just enough to say “I want to find a new job because my old one sucks.” Be specific. What will
you gain when you achieve your goal of finding a new job? Maybe the new job is in a field that you
love, so you’ll be more passionate about your work. Because of that new passion, you’ll come home
in a better mood, your man will enjoy being around you more and ask you to marry him. See how that
If it’s a business that you want, consider why. Is it the money? Freedom? A sense of pride in creating
something all your own? Once you have those things, what will change about your life?
You gotta dig deep. When you know WHY you want to be, do or have this thing you’ve set as a goal,
you start to see a clear image of success. The more vivid that image, the more motivated you will be to
have it come true.
Understand the How
If you’re starting to feel lost on the journey towards your goal, you need a better road map. Start to
write down all the things that you’ll need to do to make this happen. So that you don’t overwhelm
yourself, think of it in two phases. There’s the Planning Phase where you gather information, take small
steps and get your ducks in a row. Then, there’s the actual Launch Phase. That’s what takes place the
moment you quit the job, enroll in your first class, pack your bags or reach out to your first client.
Many people get so caught up in fear and worry about the Launch Phase, that they never start the
planning. Every journey, big or small starts the same way, you lift one foot and take the first step.
So, focus on those first steps. What research do you need to do, how much money do you need to save,
where do you need to ask for help? Even if your Launch Phase feels like it’s months or years away, make
planning a part of your daily or weekly schedule. This way, your goal never fades into the background.
