I love playing with my son, and I know that even though I’ll be getting slower as the years go by, I’m going to want to continue playing with him and being active with him as much as possible.
He already watches me jump around doing Jillian Michael’s dvds, and Insanity workouts. And he gets his workout in by running in circles around me chomping on my towel as I do the exercises. John and I know how important it is for him to not only have playtime with us, but also see us being active and doing healthy things independently. We ain’t raisin’ no couch potato! 🙂
Merck Consumer Cares launched the Active Family Project with celebrity spokesmom, Elisabeth Hasselbeck to promote the importance of making time for active family play.
I had the awesome opportunity to attend the kickoff event and participate in a “roundtable style” discussion with Elisabeth and the team from Merck. The group was very positive and encouraging for busy moms to be more active, consistently with their children.
- Calendar it – Schedule family play in to our life as you would a business meeting
- Sneak it in – It doesn’t have to be hours, 15 minute play sessions through the day are just as awesome
- Be creative – There’s no need to make a big production when playing “make believe” is enough
- Coach ’em – Moms can get even more involved by coaching teams usually coached by dad
I asked Elisabeth about dealing with the mommy guilt some moms can feel around not being able to be as active with their children as they feel they “should” and she said: (and I’m totally paraphrasing here):
“Screw the guilt and get out there any way you can. 10 minutes there, 15 minutes here, play their game, make up a “game” (like, everyone pick up the toys on the lawn as fast as we can!) and be sure to get the active fun into you and your children’s life somehow, fitting around your busy schedule.”
That’s great advice for an entrepremom, a stay at home mom, or a mom who works outside the home!
While May 11th is the date for the National Family Playdate, it is the aim of the initiative to get families active together on a regular basis. To help you with generating ideas, Merck Consumer Cares has launched an extremely useful website www.activefamilyproject.com which looks up activities in your area by zip code. So you can have some active family fun nearby, all year round.
John has a big test this Saturday, so I’m taking Roey to my parents’ house for our extended Family Play Date! We’re going to run around the backyard and play with beach balls with grandmom/grandad/Uncle G until the baby passes out!
What are some of your favorite Active Family Fun activities?
Will you be having a playdate with your kids this Saturday, May 11th?
