Book Reviews: Preggo Edition

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy

The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy – only $9.14 on amazon

I loved this book so much.  She told the good and bad, the up and down and unspoken stuff about pregnancy, from a non-doctor, non-professional point of view.  It was a lighthearted read but did give me information that I didn’t know about, and I liked how it told the reader a lot about the emotional aspects of being pregnant.  I also laughed out loud several times during this book.  I loved the writing style!  She went through what happens during the 9 10 months and the birth, and though she had very medicated birth views I still enjoyed reading about it.

Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother!

Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! – $5.98 on amazon

This book was complete GO VEGAN propaganda.
This does not annoy me in general because I like reading propaganda and then take away what I want from it.  What did annoy me, is that it doesn’t let the reader know it’s propaganda before they read it.  It would suck to be a pregnant woman, chompin on hot wings readin this book and read about how you’re killing your baby by eating the crap you’re eating.  It’s a really informative and interesting book, but I think it’s a little irresponsible, or perhaps just inconsiderate of the reader.  Especially since pregnant woman go all psycho hormonal (allegedly).

I learned tons about the meat/milk/fish industry and I absolutely LOVED that this book stated sources.  That’s my main problem with propaganda books…they just say their side of an issue without giving facts/sources/studies etc to prove their points.  These skinny bitches do.  Will I go vegan immediately after reading this book? Hell to the no.  Am I going to give my kids milk after reading this book? Hell to the no.  You pick and choose what you take from any book, ya know.  I already told you before that I think I’ll end up vegan one day though… ::shrug::  John’s going to have a cow. (pun intended)

Better World Books

OMG yall…. I just binged again.  A couple weeks ago it was clothes…gulp…last week it was books.

At the end of my binge I had 28 books in my cart. but I pared it down to a reasonable….. 13 lol.

OK.  I gotta testify.

www.BetterWorldBooks.com

If you’re not a new book snob like I used to be (tho they do have new books there) and are OK with used….you will want to shop here.

Oh where do I begin?

Picture it.  Sicily. 2011.*  It was 9:30pm on a rainy Sunday.
I’m online shopping and loaded up my cart with my final 13 books.
1:30 pm on Monday I get a message that my books have shipped!
Thursday afternoon they’re all delivered!

Best part of it?  The total for my 13 books was $45.00.

Yes!!! $45 for 13 effin books!!

(I got 2 business books, 3 finance/investing books, 4 pers/dev/spirituality books, and 4 pregnancy books….reviews coming soon)

I also found a coupon code at retailmenot.com…..  It was expired….but I still tried it….(ever the optimist)

And it worked!!

(couponwinner535 is the code by the way …and you’re welcome)  It takes $5 off an order of 35 bucks or more.

Oh and PS.  I went through Mr. Rebates so I got 3% back on my order (granted it was only like a dollar and change….but still it adds up!)

Great part of BetterWorldBooks.com is the proceeds of your sale go toward different literacy charities!! When you click on the book you can see to which charity your money will go.  A feel-good shopping experience if I do say so myself :)

I took a bunch of items out of my cart and saved it to my wish list for two months from now when I inevitably decide to book binge again.

Oh, and PS2:   I am in no way affiliated with www.betterworldbooks.com  – I just happen to think they’re awesome and worth sharing with you.

Do you shop at BetterWorldBooks? Read any good books lately?  Discovered any great new stores lately?

*no I didn’t go to Sicily, that was an homage to my boo Estelle Getty AKA Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls (a show i could watch all day long if you’d let me).  She’d always start her stories like that.  “Picture it…Sicily…1942….”

she got that book from www.betterworldbooks.com i’m sure!

Thank God I’m Not Pregnant

This isn’t what you think.

I just finished reading What to Expect When You’re Expecting and I had to thank Allah, Buddah, and Jesus that I am not currently pregnant because I would totally be freaking out and working myself into a tizzy right now.  Not good for babyH.

What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition
I read the older (3rd) edition (got it on freecycle a while back) and let me tell you….  This is not a book for newly pregnant women.  No. Freaking. Way.
I just got scared.  And scareder. And more scared. And totally didn’t want a baby by the end of it.
This is the most intimidating book ever and I don’t know why it’s the first recommended book for preggo mamas.
This book is like a bitchy old teacher.
It’s super disorganized by the way.  Birthing info is in the 7th month section….WHY?! And skips around a lot.
But more importantly it’s freaking scary and biased.
It’s all…”here are the fiftyleven things that can go wrong with your baby, but don’t be scared because doctors are gods and if anything bad happens it’s your fault you, oh and here’s the 4 things you’re allowed to eat, if you go off this 4 item plan you’re a shitty mom and your baby will hate you…if it lives, and if you’re not married in a hetero relationship and not planning on breastfeeding and not planning on being a stay at home mom….you know…because your hetero husband brings home the bacon…. then…well, you’re worthless and shouldn’t be blessed with a child.”
Maybe that was a lil dramatic…but you get what I’m saying.
The good thing about this book is that it’s Q&A style so you can skip the Qs that don’t relate to you.  It is super informative despite it’s thinly veiled judgements…or totally unveiled judgments lol like “Breast is Best!”
I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone though unless they’ve read a bunch of other (read: better) books to balance this one out with, OR if they were not yet pregnant.  I wouldn’t recommend this book to any worry warts (ie: me) or big planners (ie: me) or …. OK fine..I just wouldn’t recommend this book.

Did you read What to Expect when You’re Expecting?  What did you think of it? What pregnancy books did you read that you liked a lot? I need suggestions!!
Sidebar: it’s 4/20! This used to be a holiday for me.  ::looking down::

The Book That Changed My Life

I read an article recently that had various authors talking about the book that changed their lives. There’s even a book that compiled essays from 71 writers recounting what they learned from their life altering book. I must admit, my “to read” list has grown a bit longer now.

Of course reading these led me to think about what book changed my life. I thought perhaps it was:

Goals!: How to Get Everything You Want-Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible

Goals! By Brian Tracey. This book helped get me on track. Got me addicted to lists. And helped me be more productive.

Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life (Gawain, Shakti)

Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain was another book in the running. This book stays with me to this day as I do some of the visualization techniques in it each week. It’s a winner if you want to get into visualizing for positive results.

The Power of Intention

The Power of Intention by Wayne Dyer is high on my change my life list. After reading this book, my wavering views on religion and spirituality were solidified, and I was also able to reach the deepest level of meditation I ever had.

Awaken the Giant Within : How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny!

Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. It’s really a shame that this man’s creepy face kept me from reading this book sooner. It was a powerful book for me and the first personal development book I ever read. It’s also one of the first books I suggest to people who truly want to turn their lives around.

These books are all very dear to my heart and very impactful on my life, my outlook, my day to day life, my behavior, my beliefs…but none of them are THE book that changed my life.

If I had to give one final answer to the question what book changed my life, I would answer: My Bedside Journal. (seriously, it’s just a mead marble notebook hehe)

My journal captures dreams as I wake up, gratitude lists, vents, affirmations, plans, epiphanies, random ideas and thoughts.

Writing in my journal provides comfort to me, and a safety of sorts. It allows me to empty my brain unabashedly and without restraint.

Reading over the entries, lists, sidebars and passages in my journal has helped me see myself. And you must see yourself clearly before you can make any lasting changes, right?

I honestly believe my bedside journal both changed my life, and keeps me sane as well.

Is there a book that has changed your life? Any good books you’d recommend? Do tell!!

Money Book and Chat

On Sunday John and I had a really good money talk. He worked out a new budget and we got 100% on the same page with our joint savings, and financial plans for the future.  I realized after the convo that I was nervous to talk to him about it.  Nervous?! To talk to my own husband!  This is super weird because we talk about any and everything with ease, and we’ve had serious money convos in the past.

I guess I felt the need to be cautious with how I worded things so it wouldn’t seem like I was just bulldozing the money chat, and have it sound like “this is the way we’re doing things because this is my way and my way is the best way because I am the all-knowing Dan and I say so.”
It’s just that:
a) I’m a saver and John’s a spender and I didn’t want to sound judgey about that and
b) I’ve been reading fiftyleven finance books and am excited to put a lot of the tips into practice asap with John.
OH! And speaking of the finance books, a few weeks back I read one of the best money books ever.
Who's Afraid To Be a Millionaire: Mastering Financial and Emotional Success

Who’s Afraid to be a Millionaire? Mastering Financial and Emotional Success

By Kelvin E. Boston
Excellent is all I can say.  It was a broad overview but had specific tips and ideas.  It really spoke to you in a professional yet friendly voice giving you information and instruction and tacked the personal finance issue from the emotional angle, and the actions angle.
 The book includes:
  • Six timeless and effective wealth-building strategies
  • Proven guidance for long-term financial planning
  • How to wisely use credit as investment capital
  • How to build wealth through home ownership
  • Profitable long-term investment strategies
  • Unbeatable retirement planning and insurance advice
  • How to use human capital to build wealth
  • How to succeed the entrepreneurial way
I borrowed it from the library, and I may borrow it again or just buy it.  Granted it is from 2006, but, the principles are eternal and the way the author makes you think about your relationship with money and ideas about wealth are really worth the purchase.
Have you read this book?  How’d you like it?  Have you ever been nervous to talk to your significant other (and not when you did something shitty and have to confess lol)?  How often do you have money talks with your significant other?
