30 things my kid(s) should know about me

I noticed this list as a blogging series on WeatherAnchorMama who got it from BabyMakingMachine. Two bloggers that I just love. Met WAM at BlogHer last year and hopefully will meet BMM one day soon.

Anyway, I thought this would be great to do for my sour patch kid (and his siblings-to-be), not as a dedicated post series, but at my liesure when the mood strikes. Figured I’d share with you in the event you’d like to do it as well.

Seems like a really nice way to show yourself to your children…when they’re old enough to appreciate it. Even though I’ll be a different person then than I am now, it’ll be nice to show them who mom was at 30.

I would totally want to read a first hand account of where my mom’s head was when I was a baby. She was only 21! I imagine myself with a child at 21 and pity that poor baby.

Anyway, here are the prompts.

THE LIST:

1. List 20 random facts about yourself.
2. Describe 3 legitimate fears you have and explain how they became fears
3. Describe your relationship with your spouse.
4. List 10 things you would tell your 16 year-old self, if you could.
5. What are the 5 things that make you most happy right now?
6. If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for?
7. What is your dream job, and why?
8. What are 5 passions you have?
9. List 10 people who have influenced you and describe how.
10. Describe your most embarrassing moment.
11. Describe 10 pet peeves you have.
12. Describe a typical day in your current life.
13. What’s the hardest part of growing up?
14. Describe 5 and weaknesses strengths you have.
15. Describe when you knew your spouse was the one or how I fell in love.
16. What are your 5 greatest accomplishments?
17. What is the thing you most wish you were great at?
18. What do you think your spouse loves most about you?
19. How did you feel the moment you became a parent?
20. Describe 3 significant memories from your childhood.
21. Describe your relationship with your parents.
22. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?
23. What’s your favorite holiday and why?
24. What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about parenthood?
25. If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be and what would you eat?
26. What popular notion do you think the world has most wrong?
27. What is your favorite part of your body and why?
28. What’s your favorite quality in your spouse?
29. What are your hopes and dreams for your prosperity?
30. List 10 things you would hope to be remembered for.

Have you done this, or a project like this, on your blog or otherwise? I’d love to see it if you have!

Apropos of nothing:

Don’t forget to enter the Shell Fuel Rewards Network Program gsweepstakes I posted about HERE!! You can win $100 worth of gas!! The sweepstakes ends June 2.

Authentic Blogging

Authentic.

We hear this word a lot with blogging, don’t we?

At BlogHer’12 this word came up a lot. It was in almost every panelist’s list of what makes a great blogger. I’ve read two inauthentic blogs lately and it really stood out to me. One was about a “stripper” and one was about an nyc “actress” and both were so fake sounding it was so obvi just a phony blog set up to hopefully earn some money. And hey, I hope they do earn money…the blogs were fake, but they were kinda entertaining!

Anyway, I did a little soul searching, and okdani archive reading, and realized I wasn’t being truly authentic here. That’s not saying that I wasn’t being completely honest with you all, or not being real or not using my voice, but I realized that I keep a lot of things off of my blog. Some things, like politics, or my feelings on controversial news items I keep off the blog consciously and reserve for twitter or FB. Other items I realize I don’t speak about much here, or just mention peripherally in passing like:

  • spiritual life/practices
  • business pursuits
  • joys and pains of married life

These are huge parts of my life…and while I’m a mommy, and a blogger, I don’t feel like I’m solely a mommy blogger. Maybe I am in denial but I feel I’m a “lifestyle blogger” (if I had to choose a pigeon hole) and want to represent my whole self better here. Sometimes I’ll have a business issue weighing heavily on my mind while I’m sitting down to write a post, but instead of posting about that, I’ll write about Sharkie or review something. That’s not 100% authentic, in my interpretation of the word.

I know I won’t be discussing politics here anytime soon and you’ll likely never seen an “outfit of the day” type post from me. I also won’t be switching up my voice or changing too much around here. Example: I wanted to incorporate coupons on the blog because I’m starting to turn into a bit of a couponer but that didn’t seem to fit my posting vibe, so I made a separate coupon page in case people want to check them out and hopefully save some dough.

That actually leads me to another thought…what do you girls want to see more or less of on the blog? Do tell! If I had made a post with a listing of coupons, would it really have been so odd? The blog is a bit of a random hodgepodge even if it’s been pregnancy/mommyhood skewed these days…(and likely will be from now on.)

I like posting about what hits me, what’s going on with us and I love getting your input on things in the comments. I’ll always “do me” on this blog, but I’d love to know what you guys would like to see, or hate seeing here.

I know being an authentic blogger means different things to different bloggers. To me it entails showing a 360 degree view of myself to you. I’ll try to remember to do this more.

What is authentic blogging to you? What do you want to see more or less of here? You can tell me in the comments or email me at okaydani@gmail.com

The #BlogHer12 Recap

DISCLAIMER: I took like 4 pics the entire weekend, sorry yall. Next conference I will be sure to have my phone or camera out and in action a LOT.

Oh BlogHer12, what a weekend you gave me! Thank You!

I was lucky enough to join 5000 other bloggers in my beloved NYC for a whirlwind of blogging info, networking, brands, fun and goodies! It was my first ever conference and I’m so grateful I was able to go.

I won’t dare bore you girls with a play by play style review, so I’ll just plop a few aspects of the weekend into mini recaps for ya:

Personal Highlights

  • learning so much outside of the sessions from one on one convos
  • winning $250 at the retailmenot booth
  • getting even more comfortable traveling solo with Sharkie
  • meeting some of the bloggers I dig so much
  • doing an on camera interview with Kate Geagan for Earths Best
  • winning a toy pack at Hasbro to give to my niece
  • advocating for breastfeeding w/ so many of the women I spoke with
  • seeing and discussing natural hair with so many women of all backgrounds

Sessions

Maaaan, at every time slot there were about 3 sessions I wanted to attend. It was very hard deciding what to do since everything looked so good. I took sessions regarding media training, vlogging, connecting with brands, protecting your blog and had to pass up sessions on SEO, social media, and passion blogging. I heard that all sessions were taped for us to view later so I’ll definitely be taking advantage of the recordings.

The sessions had good content overall, some better than others. I’ve been blogging for a while but am a newbie when it comes to blogging as a business. Some sessions were so basic I just had to leave and try something else. Bigger spaces would’ve been great, loads of sessions got filled to capacity quickly.

I came to learn and despite the basic level info in some sessions, I learned a ton. I’ve already started implementing some of the gems I learned in the vlogging session. (my fave session btw)

Speakers

Oh man, Blogher really gave us some great speakers!

OBAMA – Need I say more? – You can see that talk HERE if you’re interested

Martha Stewart – I respect her for all she’s done and how she’s done it, but I was never really a Martha Stewart fan. After seeing her be so charming at Blogher I see her in a much more positive light. It felt like she was trying to be well received, but not trying too hard… if that makes sense. She was still Martha. One thing I liked that she said that I’m adopting in my life is that she tries to learn something new every single day.

Katie Couric – Exactly as I thought she’d be…charming, sweet, smart, relevant… I could go on but I wont. She has a talk show starting on Sept 10 (best day ever) and I plan on watching. She seemed so warm and real on stage, I’m sure she’ll bring that signature style of hers to the show.

Soledad Obrien – I have a girl crush on this woman. She is such a pro. So smart, charming but with such a fierceness about her as well. After sharing the good work she’s doing with her nonprofit, she moderated a talk with the women below about their philanthropical endeavors:

Malaak Compton Rock – ::sigh:: I was underwhelmed and just felt bad for her. She just couldn’t “get right.” She was either dealing with something internally or just incredibly unprepared. I won’t put her business out on the street, I’ll let my bloggie friend Weather Anchor Mama do that. She’s far more eloquent than I. Click HERE to read her review of the Malaak incident.

Christy Turlington Burns – I didn’t know anything of this woman other than she’s strikingly beautiful and I’m jealous of her height. Turns out, this model’s got a brain and a big heart too! She spoke about her foundation that focuses on mothers and was a welcome presence on the stage to counteract Malaak’s messup.

Attendees

One very special attendee was my lil man. And can I tell you…ALL THE, ALL THE LADIES LOVE HIM (you aint F*kin with his dougie).

The event was 99% women. I loved the “girl power” feel of the place. Majority of the women were friendly, smiling as they passed by, cooing over the baby, chatty and outgoing. Some seemed shy, nervous or tentative… And some… Well…some seemed like they’ve never seen a black woman in real life before. I got a few hair comments/questions, but nothing rude. But I got a lot of stares, and not the “boy i want to join that convo but I’m too shy please notice and include me” stare… more of a… “omg look at those black women all in a group. Are they a gang? What are they up to” stare. Not cool.

Check out Luvvie’s experience with one of the women at the event HERE. You will die laughing. Don’t take a sip of anything while reading.

Parties

Thanks to Quiana at Harlem Love Birds I was invited to a Hasbro party during BlogHer and had a great time. I even won a whole mess of toys in a name that tune game! The party was fun despite a long slow line to enter and noise about limited gift bags (I got one! hehe). I just wish it was smaller, or more conducive to networking. I wasn’t really able to chat with anyone except for the fab women I came with.

Trina at The Baby Shopaholic invited me to her event Lipstick & High Heels at Pranna sponsored by Eden Bodyworks. This was a wonderful networking event and I got to meet tons of great women bloggers, some that I already stalk follow. This event was more my speed than the Hasbro event. It was smaller, more intimate and I was able to speak with most of the women there one on one, even briefly.

Overall

Despite being overwhelmed, tired, and achey after this weekend, I LOVED the Blogher conference and cannot wait for the next one! I learned a lot, and left feeling so inspired. I had intended on learning what I can, connecting as best I can with other bloggers and brands…and that’s just what I did. However, I didn’t expect to be as inspired as I am now.  I left the conference with a mind bubbling over with ideas for my blogs, my vlog, and how to integrate my coaching business with my writing and even with my blogs!

Before the conference I was excited about this year because I’m able to stay home with Rohan for a bit, but now I’m excited about the year professionally as well. I’m on a conference high yall.  I cannot wait for the next one. I’m hoping to wrangle sponsorship to attend BlissDom in March and BlogHer13 in July.

Have you ever gone to an event that totally inspired you?

I’m Going To BlogHer’12!

Girls, I just gotta share, I’m SO SO EXCITED to say, that I am going to be attending my first blogher conference in just under a month!  I’m heading to BlogHer’12!! It’ll be in NYC so it’s super convenient for me.

I’m psyched to meet tons of bloggers I follow, learn tons of great blogging info, make new connections, network and finally do something to take my blogs more seriously. I’ve got a few party invites too, so that’s cool.  I’m going to meet a million interesting and inspiring bloggie people! YAY!

With this being my first conference, I’m a lil nervous and have so many questions:

  • what do i wear?
  • do i need business cards?
  • wtf do I say to the brand reps?
  • how do I wrangle guest blogging opps?
  • how do I wrangle brand relationships?
  • who will I sit with?

Most importantly:

  • How will I style my hair?!

Just kidding….

Most importantly:

  • Can I do this with a 2 month old in tow??!!

John is home on the first day of the conference so he’ll be watching Roey…but on Saturday he’ll be working so I’ll have him.  Is it smart to take a baby to a blog conference? Is that just a mega bad mommy move?  Should I just register for Friday’s sessions and stay home on Saturday? Do other people bring their babies or will I be the lone mommy weirdo?

SO.

Many.

Questions.

Then there’s the nagging low-blog-esteem question of do I even belong there?! What business do I have going…I have a tiny lil personal blog and a tinier hair blog. The women going are Mom Ambassadors to amazing brands and have fifty eleven readers and twitter followers who support them. Should I even go?!

::sigh::

Underneath these doubty questions is a simmering “hell yes i belong there!” which is why I’m registering lol. I’m truly excited, despite all the questions and nerves. I’ve got about a month to get myself together.

What all do I need?

Any BlogHer conference vets out there with advice to give?! How was your experience at BlogHer? Are you going this year? IF so…YOU BETTER COME FIND ME SO WE CAN CHAT! (and take pics :) )  Should I bring the boy?!  Help!

I Wish I Were A Different Blogger

Ok wait, I don’t really wish I was a different blogger, cuz honestly, I think I’m pretty awesome, BUT I do wish I had some of the qualities of the people I stalk, follow, adore online.  I was catching up on tons of blogs and realized I was suffering from B.I.S.

Blogger Inadequacy Syndrome.  I hear it strikes bloggers when they overdose on awesome blogs.  There is no cure….though I tried Oreos and milk.  (it kinda helped)

First off, I wish I took my camera everywhere with me and snapped pictures of the random stuff I do so I can tell you guys without being boring.  Faith is really good at this, even if her hubby’s not always the happiest at being in a photoshoot all the time.  John’s a ham so he wouldn’t mind.  But I’m SO forgetful about that daggone camera…and my cameraphone for that matter. It’s always with me, but I forget about it.

I wish I did more longish heartfelt posts and informative/helpful posts like Mrs. Pancakes and Mrs. H.  It would bring so much more value to the blog.

I wish I was crafty so I could post how-tos of adorable baby clothes and decorations like Jen.  But I’m sure if I even thought about buying a hot glue gun I’d find a way to glue my hand to my cheek or something.

I wish I did more hair posts like Nikki and Loo and JC and … ok this one would be a long list, but I wish I remembered to take pics of the cute (and the notsocute) things I do with my hair and give tutorials and chronicle the natural journey like I used to.

I wish I capitalized on more opportunities like Kini and Alicia.  They’ve always got great events to blog about!

I have to stop and remember why I choose to continue blogging as a hobby.  Yeah, it’s partly to chronicle life, have something to look back on, to show my kids like, “look mommy used to be hot and skinny!”  And yeah it’s partly to fill a need to share, to connect and learn, to write, to entertain, to be a narcissist on some level.  And I love that it’s partly to meet great new friends near and far – a happy byproduct that I didn’t expect!

But ultimately it’s for me.  It IS me. Just in blog form.  So I’ll let Jen and Mrs H and all of them be them, and keep churning out my random b.s. and babyobsessiveness cuz that’s me.  And I’m a good blogger dammit!  (Even when I disappear for a week or so……right?……right?….Beuler?)

That said, please let me know if there’s anything that you want to see more of on this blog, or never want to see again!  I’d LOVE to hear your input.  I have a few posts that were too personal to share so I just published it private, so I see it when I check my blog but others can’t.  If there are certain types of posts a bunch of you don’t dig, I’ll just post those privately going forward.

Are there any bloggers you admire? Any changes you’d like to see here on OK, Dani? Have you made any changes to your blog recently?
