How Do You Make Money Online?

make money online with ease

I have been debating whether or not to post this piece but someone shared a piece with me today about how quitting your job to be your own boss is BS and I figured this was the day to share this. I’m not linking to the piece because I don’t want to contribute to the pageviews of the author’s negativity.

How Do You Make Money Online?

This is one of the top questions I’m asked and I am happy to answer it as it relates to me. I used to include “the internet and making money from it” on my gratitude lists every week in the Mind Right Monday series I had here, and since then the question has continued to come in to my email quite often.

Please know this is not meant to be a “be all end all” post. Just my personal snapshot of revenue streams as it stands today, and a little bit of an idea on how you can do the same…and IF you should do the same at all…

NOTE: The answer to this question looks different to every one you may ask. Even another “mommy” or “lifestyle” blogger will have different responses. I’m not one who blogs about blogging, nor do I plan on sharing income reports etc..*COUGH*team stay out my pockets*COUGH* but I will tell anyone what I do simply because I love it, it’s not hard, and you can totally do it too if you want to. It just takes a little bit of effort and consistency.

I make my living online. I’m SO grateful to be able to say that. I stopped pursuing a long-time big dream (entertainment) when I was just starting to gain some traction because I wanted to fulfill a bigger dream of being a mother. Well, specifically, I wanted to be a mother who is home with her children daily until they’re grown. There was a lot I had to do to facilitate this dream coming to life and I am over-the-moon happy that over the years I was able to build a business that can sustain us if I needed it to while I’m home with my little ones.

Here’s how I make money online:

  • Blogging at /
  • Social Media (stemming from OKDani)
  • Freelance writing for other sites
  • Wellness coaching independently
  • Health/Fitness coaching through Beachbody
  • T-shirt/Mug sales via InTEElligence

And now, it’s time for the breakdown: (nevagunnagetitnevagunnagetit)

This site has been making me steady money since right after the BlogHer conference in 2012. (Even though I started the daggone site back in 2009 ::heavysigh:: #dontjudgeme #iknewnothingjohnsnow) It started as a hobby and turned into much more. Here are the ways I’m currently earning:

Affiliate sales:

Almost every brand has an affiliate program. What you do is join directly or via an affiliate network (My preference is this one) and link to the brand, or product directly on your site. When someone clicks and buys through your link, you get some pennies. (or hundreds of dollars) Amazon Affiliates is a popular and easy program to use.

Sponsored posts:

This is where you create content for a brand. I find these opportunities directly, via pitching myself to certain companies, as well as indirectly through a middleman called a blogging network/influencer network. I use many and honestly I dig them all but right now my faves are SoFab, Clever Girls, Type A, Influence Central, and of course BlogHer.

Ad revenue:

I use private advertisers, google adsense, yahoo ads, and BlogHer’s ad network. You simply add the ad code to your blog, and collect your money every month.

Full transparency: is not bringing in income other than some google adsense coinage, but I will return to giving it more effort in the months ahead.

Tips for how you can do it too:

  • Start a blog – It’s as easy as buying a domain, getting hosting, loading up a theme, and starting to write.
  • Create content people enjoy reading
  • Join blogging networks, blogging groups, affiliate networks, adsense/

Not for you if:

  • You aren’t up for the task of maintaining a blog (it takes a lot, sometimes)
  • You don’t enjoy creating content in various mediums (words, images, videos)
  • You don’t like to self promote or promote others

Social Media

How I make money via social media is two fold. One is via sponsored content and the other is participating in or hosting twitter parties. The sponsored content is contracted via the same networks mentioned above, or directly from a brand.

You can do it too:

  • Grow your social media accounts through content and engagement
  • Use influencer networks or your own digging to find sponsored content opportunities
  • Pitch to brands to be a panelist or host for a twitter party

Not for you if:

  • No social media presence and not willing to grow
  • Not willing to promote and big up other people/brands

Freelance Writing

I have been freelance writing for several years. I did ghostwriting for a client up until very recently when they closed up shop. I recently started a gig regularly contributing to a popular blog and I contribute sporadically (on a freelance basis) to a variety of blogs/websites. I’m pretty much always looking for more places to contribute to for pay. For me this is a no brainer because writing is easy for me. If you enjoy writing this may be the easiest way to start earning money online. (TIP: Create an alias to write under if you want to be published in topics/outlets that don’t mesh well with your current public persona.)

Tips for how you can do it too:

  • Find a topic you enjoy writing about and start writing about it
  • Seek out places that will pay you for submissions – Google is my best friend for this
  • Write for others often, even if not paid, to build a resume to show paid gigs how great you are

Not for you if:

  • You don’t enjoy writing
  • You’ll catch feelings if an editor shreds your work to pieces
  • You have no get up ‘n go to seek out opportunities for yourself
  • You can’t keep a deadline

Life/Wellness Coaching (Independently)

I am a certified life coach. I went to NYU for my training and cert. Now I work with busy women who are trying to create healthy, happy, lives they love. We have regular conversations and work to strategize, set goals, redesign their lives to prioritize what they feel will make their lives better. This is done 1:1 via google hangouts mostly, some on the phone. I grew my client base mostly through them emailing me via OKDani. Once I get my ish together a bit more I will get my site together for this offering.

Full transparency – I recently completed with my last client and am putting this on temporary hold until I find a way to do it that brings me as much joy/fulfillment as it did when I first got my coaching certification. I’ll be continuing my beachbody group coaching during this time though.

You can do this too by:

  • Deciding what you’re good at, and can teach to others
  • Get a coaching certification (or not lol – everyone’s a ‘coach’ these days so this step isn’t even mandatory anymore – just read up on how to coach folks so you can actually be of value)
  • Start offering free tips/help/guidance
  • “Hang your shingle”

Not for you if:

  • You lack confidence or a strong voice
  • You don’t truly want to help people and just want to “get” clients for money
  • You’re not willing to learn the craft of coaching (even if it’s through books/personal study and not an official course)

Beachbody Coaching

I refrain from talking about this here on OKDani but I think I’m going to start bringing it up more because it’s such a huge part of my life and I LOVE it. I coach women online who purchase beachbody products through me. I also just sell the products to people who are interested in getting fit without group coaching. Another part of the beachbody business is building a team of coaches, which I haven’t had interest in doing, but will surely up my income immensely when I do. Any of my clients who want to join as a coach to save 25% on beachbody products, I just have them sign up as a coach under me. I initially did that to save 25% on shakeology myself.

This source of income is the easiest to manipulate. We get paid weekly, so when I need a bump of cash immediately, I will advertise my services, or start a challenge group so I get immediate sales. (Note: With blogging, the chunks of money are much larger, but take weeks-months to hit the paypal.)

You can do this too by:

Not for you if:

  • You don’t truly want to help people
  • You’re lazy – The money I make here is completely related to how much effort I am putting into it.

Note: You do not have to be fit/in shape/a guru etc (and it’s even better when you’re not). And you do not have to have any sales quotas met, have any product in your home, etc. It’s all done online and beachbody does all fulfillment for you.

T-Shirt / Mug Sales

I have a tee shirt site called InTEElligence. (cute right?! lol) I just started this revenue stream late last year and haven’t really put effort into this (full disclosure). Because I don’t advertise and have many changes to make to the inventory I only get a few sales each month ::hangs head:: However, don’t let my experience thwart you if this is something you’re interested in. I have several friends making great steady, full-time, DAILY income with their T shirt sales.

You can do this too by:

  • Think up some cute shirt/mug ideas
  • Open up a shop on spreadshirt or teespring or one of the millions of other sites

Seriously… anyone can do it and if they advertise well can make a great profit from it.

Not for you if:

  • You’re gunna be lazy like me and not update your pieces or advertise your shop! ::slaps own wrist::
  • You’re going to copycat other people vs thinking up your own unique ideas
  • You’re not interested in serving others with great product/customer service

As you can see, there’s a trend in the “not for you if” sections on each of these. If you’re not looking to give/serve and are just looking for a quick buck while you just be lazy…this entrepreneurship thang is NOT for you.

So, that’s my story. Quitting my job to pursue entrepreneurship was the best thing I’ve ever done….besides create two amazing children and marry my best friend. I’m not making millions of dollars (yet) but I am doing well. In the future I’ll be adding more revenue streams and tweaking/removing some I currently have in place as I grow. It’s always a work in progress, like anything else.

Hopefully you’ll work to grow your online business and be able to leave your 9-5 if you choose. It’s not bs. It can be done. It just takes effort and consistency. You can do it. I hope this post was encouraging, even if you don’t intend to make money in the same ways as I am. There are plenty of ways that you can make a living online that will feel good to your soul. And there is limitless opportunity. Good luck to you!

OK, Dani Reader Survey

reader survey 2016

If you missed yesterday’s email… I sent out the Reader Survey and I would LOVE and APPRECIATE it if you’d fill it out when you have a sec. It’ll only take a minute.

(If you’re not subscribed for emails, CLICK HERE to join us!)

We talk about so many topics here and I want to be sure I’m bringing you the content you want to see most…..and avoiding what you don’t want to talk about…(for the most part…I mean…if you want me to start talking politics or fashion all day, I’m gunna have to say nah.)

Also, I’m itching to put together a program of some sort for you girls so let me know what you’d care to get from me.

It’s hard sometimes when you run a “lifestyle” blog…because it’s such a big umbrella and our lives are so varied… so please let me hear your thoughts via the survey.

WARNING: If you guys don’t answer it, I’m just gunna flood this blog with impeccably staged pics of Ro and Kai and tell you what perfect, tantrum-free unicorns they are until you’re absolutely sick of my lying ass and block me on all social media.

We don’t want that.

Thanks in advance!!

#BYOE15 – Blogalicious Recap

Above is a ‘scope of Blogalicious Takeaways I did shortly after returning. I thought I lost this vid. Thank God for!

I’ve owed this review for ever… It has been in draft for ages… #judgemeifyawanna

This is the first year since 1999 (freshman year at college) that I spent my birthday away from my family and close friends. This year I spent it with new friends and it was for good cause!
I attended Stacey Ferguson’s Blogalicious Conference and it was the shiiizzzznizzy.

Now, you all know me. I always forget to take pictures, so the few that I did take, I’ll share here.

So, Wednesday I took my first connecting flight to Baltimore. My second time in the city, and still just a short stint. Last time I went it was just the day before our cruise with Roey. Downtown Baltimore reminds me of Seattle.

Anyway, I met up w/ my girl Roni, the travel guru, and we had dinner with a Tanay, an e-friend of mine (and blogger on the low) from back in the days when I was obsessed with natural hair care.

Then Roni and I had wine and I said funny things.

It’s my birthday!!! 34 is going to be one hell of a year!! So what if I woke up slightly hungover for the first time in….forever. I still went for a run tho…

Thursday morning was VIP Day at Blogalicious. It was an extra day that offered additional sessions for people who wanted more meaty info…and were willing to pay for it. I gifted myself this day and I think it will probably be the most valuable birthday gift ever. (well, second to life of course…thanks mommy). The day was chock full of info from great speakers. Here are some gems:

Aprille Franks Hunt

  • Abundance is not an accident.
  • Think about what people often ask you about…and do that! Monetize that! (this advice has legit given me a pre-midlife crisis lol)

Lamar Tyler

  • What are you doing to make money today?
  • Why are you not rich? (ouch!)
  • Scale up by using systems, don’t reinvent the wheel, automate like a mofo.
  • Start RIGHT NOW – Sell something, anything, go, NOW.

Jessica Clark

  • You need to pay yourself more, and pay yourself first.
  • Organization is key to keeping your business a business and not a hobby.

Stacey Ferguson

  • It’s all about relationships. ALL.
  • Be brave and strategic about reaching out to companies for sponsorship.
  • Don’t be scrrd about creating epic events, just do it wisely.

During Aprille and Lamar’s talks…I had like fifty thousand epiphanies. It was ridiculous. Overall this day was about mindset for me. Getting into your head that you’re a businesswoman first, and it manifests as a life coach, a writer, a blogger, a speaker, a fitness coach (at least in my case this is how it manifests). There was also a lot of mindset work around wealth and allowing yourself to be wealthy by doing what it takes to become wealthy. A whole helluva lot of “get out of your own way” stuff.

That evening I went to the VIP networking party and then out for dinner with some phenomenal blogger friends. I ate all the lobster mac and all the crab cakes I could handle.

Friday, September 11, 2015

This was the official first day of the conference. I started the day with a guided mindfulness meditation session. It was really nice to see this on the Blogalicious agenda! I used to be heavy into meditation, but slacked off after some spooky experiences that scared the hell outta me. So I would purposefully keep my meditations light. But know this, light meditations, mindfulness meditations, and simple breathing exercises, are still very powerful and can have big impact in your life. (Do you meditate? If not, just try it! – This guide right here is great!)

Anywaaaaay, back on topic.

I attended a few sessions and here are my takeaways:

Arsha Jones taught us to diversify or die trying, and to match my passion/expertise with current trends

Then she left us with specific, actionable tips on how to create a tee shirt store and market the hell out of it.

PS: Check out Inteelligence yall! (no, really…go right now… buy something, then come right back) 🙂

The adorably pregnant Kailei Carr gave us tips on showing up with a polished presence, using pro tools and being prepared as a pro at all times: cards, online presence, media kit etc. (and fun fact, she donated a toy to Roey and Kaya so I wouldn’t come home with just one for them to fight over)

kaya with elmo letters toy

Maya Elious schooled us on Purpose (emotional), Positioning (rational), and Presentation (visual) the keys for our success in branding and business. (Check her out, she currently has a great #Getpaidchallenge goin on)

Julie from SheKnows says to own your expertise and reminded us that publishers and media love an expert!

Guess who’s officially calling herself a wellness expert and a lifestyle expert when needed.  (hint: me.)

Saturday, September 12, 2015

Started the day with a fun group workout from a local trainer. It was kinda challenging! I opted out of a lilbit of it. 🙂

My girl Nicole Walters and her big ass smile came through and spoke to us about MonetizingThyself. She gave some of her tricks about amazon affiliates and using periscope to win.

On this day, the Mayor of Baltimore spoke to us and my main takeaway from her was:

Do you, and do what you want… cuz people are gunna run their damn mouths about you no matter what you do.

And: “the pie is infinite – no need to fight for a slice of pie.”

There was an excellent financial session there, it was more of a motivational talk with little gems like: “start with what you’ve got in your hand” “it’s about the mindset, not the money.” and “I want my (financial) ceiling to be my children’s floor” #deep lol

Regina of the epic blog schooled us on creating products as a biz model. I would try to recap this for you, but her session was so chock full of info i’m STILL overwhelmed… Check out her too-good-to-be-free site for tons of info on building your biz.

I also attended the session on Joint Ventures and though I had to leave it early, it got my wheels spinning on how to partner well with someone… and then the “Moms & Biz” Blab show collaboration fell into place. #lawofattraction for the win!

Closing party…

I must admit. I think I stayed for about 1/2 hour. I was tired yall. I’m gettin’ old. And the DJ was 14 years old….and I”m not exaggerating to be funny. She was actually 14. What were you doing at 14? I was smoking weed and checkin’ for boys… this child has a full on career. #fml.

Oh, but I did take 2 pics there 🙂

My girl Alisha (the most contest winningest chick I ever met)

Christa and Quiana two of my blogger boos (Fun fact: Quiana actually introduced me to blogalicious in one of her epic recap posts years ago)

Can we talk about Miss Shirleys?

miss shirleys chicken and waffles okdani

Lord. Have. Mercy.

I had a great chat at breakfast with Danielle of ChicBrownBride. And then ubered back to the airport to face reality. I usually sleep on planes… for the first time ever in history, I stayed awake on a plane and was writing ideas, notes, to dos, blog post drafts, brainstorming business stuff. My brain was on overdrive.

So. My goals for the conference were:

blogalicious goals

I did pretty well.

I didn’t take much time for me, though. I took like zero pics (as usual) and I didn’t reach out to as many new people as I could have but it was wonderful anyway.

Overall I enjoyed the conference. I only have BlogHer to compare it to and I’d say… you really can’t compare the two. The size and attendees alone make it a huge difference. My only negative is that I didn’t expect the sales pitch at the end of the sessions. I don’t particularly care for folks selling from a stage I paid to sit in front of….But…I heard from some Blogalicious vets that this is absolutely not the norm though, so maybe it’ll be different next year.

Will I go back to Blogalicious next year? Maybe. I’d love to speak there, but even if not, I think it would be a wonderful “family reunion” type event to attend if I can. I love that I have a clear picture of where I am in my business right now, so I can look back fondly next year if I attend and see the progress I made after implementing what I learned that weekend.

Have you been to Blogalicious?

What have you learned lately?

Good Reads

This week, recovering from surgery I spent a LOT of time laying in bed trolling the internet to occupy my time. Here are some of the fruits of my labor:

Afrobella’s Droppin’ Knowledge

Check her out giving the top things she’s learned 9 years deep in this blogging biz.  My fave gem is #6 and second fave is #10  (What’s yours?) So excited for and proud of her, even though I don’t know her know her… You know?

This chick makes me sick.

Every time I visit this chick’s blog I learn a million things I need to do to get my blogging life. I almost dread reading there because I know it’ll add to my already-too-long list of to-dos with this bloggy business of mine. Seriously, Regina is the ish, and I’m stoked I found her blog when I did. This post….::sigh:: just bookmark it cuz you’re gunna have to go back fiftyeleven times. (I hope I don’t stan out when I see her at Blogalicious. – Are you going?)

I’m Famous….

Ok, not exactly, but QuirkyBrownLove blog included me in their list of 200 Amazing Black Bloggers you should know. Super psyched to be on the list. And seriously… you need to go check out this resource. I wasted spent half a day just reading through lots of new blogs thanks to this list. She has it broken down by category to make it easy.

Grey’s Okay!

So I’m cutting my hair and dying itpurple. In searching the interwebz for inspiration pics and cuts, I fell down the rabbit hole… you know how that happens when you hop from blog to blog from random links in the prior blog. Somehow I ended up at Ty Alexander’s blog Gorgeous in Grey and saw this piece full of heads that were looking…gorgeous…in…grey. #imcreative. I’m still going purple, but I do like the look of this… For some reason it reminded me of this meme:

But, No, Really….I’m Famous!

Good Housekeeping Magazine shared a list of great tips from “Super Organized Moms” Somebody tricked them into including my tip 🙂 Of course, my tip is basically saying “be lazy, and enjoy it” So ummm yeah…  Check out the post for some tips to get your life together. The laundry tip is one that I’ve been doing for years, it makes life SO much more bearable.

When in doubt, I will search random stuff and it will inspire something for future blog posts.

Here are a ton of great ideas from blogs I love and some blogs I just discovered recently via google.
