Career Change Ahead?

career-change-okdani-blog

I’ve mentioned being grateful that we’re moving to Florida because I’ll have a large network of (very willing) support down there. I’ll be able to leave Rohan and his future little sister in loving, capable hands if I need to work outside the home, or finish a school project under a deadline, etc.

Having a support system when it comes to a career change incredibly important. I’m in the midst of a huge decision. I was attending courses online for a masters degree in counseling and have been out of school since early last year (hides face in shame). I’ve been waffling about returning to school because I am considering a change in major. I’m looking into programs in education, which is a big jump from counseling (I was on the marriage and family therapy track). *GULP*.

I feel super grateful to have a strong support system to help me through this huge decision and the issues I’ll face after the decision is made. There are time commitment concerns, financial concerns and lots of logistics concerns. But after that, there’s the huge concern over the actual career change itself! Luckily I have mentors, family members and friends who can support me during this time and after.

I’m all about mentors, whether through an organization or through networking websites and social media. It’s such a great thing to have someone who’s in the industry you’re interested in to give you excellent insider advice! I’ve reached out to some folks via social media who have been very responsive, and I’ve reached out to some educator friends of mine who have given great advice about both the field after graduation, as well as the inside story on being an education major.

The members of my immediate family serve as mentors as well. I know I could count on my parents to give me honest insight, advice, and ideas about making this change. And, of course there’s John, who is supportive of me no matter what harebrained scheme I come up with. It’s good to have a hubby that will be honest, yet supportive of your ideas.

I’m still deciding on my path. I’m quite nervous about this decision actually, but glad that there are so many avenues for education in my new field, as well as opportunities. But having the support I have makes everything about the decision so much easier.

Its a big step but it sounds like you have an awesome support system waiting. I did the opposite. Went for early childhood education in undergrad but got my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. Follow your heart and you will not be disappointed!

I may wanna pick your brain about MFT if I decide to keep things the same! Hope that’s OK? It really is a big step. What made you make the change in direction?

      • T Good

Absolutely! I made the switch once I had my own children. Kids at home AND at work was overload for me. I’m such a true believer in God’s purpose for marriage that MFT felt natural to me. I am an introvert which makes me an awesome listener. I’m also a natural at giving advice so it was an appropriate change.

Florida? I missed that announcement. I’ll probably be able to see you more. My husband is from Miami so we are down that way often.

Only advice I have is make sure you know when you start. I got my MBA and now I want to do something else. Don’t ask me what because I don’t know.

It’s so hard isn’t it? What to do, oh what to do? Oh we’ll be about an hour from Miami!

Congrats on Florida – Hubby and I are trying desperately to make that move. Like you – all our support is there, and not for nothing – it would be great to have a date night without the kids and knowing that they are in the loving hands of their grandparents! Hoping to be like you end of year!
