Let The Teething Begin

cute baby

I was in denial, or maybe disbelief but, I seriously wasn’t expecting this. It looks like Sharkie is beginning to teethe. The past week he’s been super cranky. His play mat and other activities aren’t holding his attention as long as they used to and he fusses to be picked up and snuggled upright. The past 3 weeks he’s been a drool monster. Now he’s an extra drool monster, and is gnawing on everything. (my collarbone, his play mat, any appendage, the bed, anything that comes near his face really) His bibs are completely useless, they get soaked in 2.5 seconds and I have to change them so often.

baby drooling

I feel like it’s his life goal to get his entire hand in his mouth. I see him gnawing on his entire fist like it’s the most delicious treat ever. He’s started chomping on my nipples now! And it hurts! His lil gums aren’t exactly swollen yet, but you can feel a difference in the front lower gum area. No fever yet, and he’s not pulling at his ear.

I didn’t know this could happen so early! Then I read online at BabyCenter how many moms have babies who actually started to teeth at 2 months and cut their first teeth at 3 months! Yowza. I thought I wouldn’t have to deal with this for a couple more months. Then again, some babies are born with teeth so I guess starting to teethe at 3 months isn’t so weird.

The biting is really starting to get to me though. I break the suction and take him away from my breast and tell him “No Biting!” but I don’t think he gets it LOL. He just looks at me with a big gummy smile and shoves his fist in his mouth. He won’t take a pacifier (I’m secretly thrilled about this) but he will chew it if you hold it in his mouth for him….that lazy buggar!

I’m going to find some bpa free teethers so he can enjoy gnawing on even more things and some organic gum soother for when things seem to really get uncomfortable for him.

When did teething start for your little ones? Did you have to deal with nipple biting?

  1. oh my i could die in his dimples!!!!!
my little man started teething at 5 months and cut his first tooth at 6 months just in time for his first solids. lucky for us, his only sign of teething is an obscene amount of drool and a slight change in his latch. he got 8 teeth before he turned 1 and none since then. lol!

as for biting, when my boy chomped down, I would put him down and say “no biting!! That hurts mommy!! OW!” and not nurse for the next 2 minutes. he would cry but he eventually got the point. Usually, they will only bite if they are done eating/ bored, so I try to be very efficient when nursing.

    • Now that you mention it, it feels like his latch is slightly different, shallower at first, then when he’s done/bored he pulls in deeper and sets to chompin! Your technique is what I’ve been doing, I hope this doesn’t last too long!

  2. Yowza indeed! Wow, that does seem too early but you’re right, I’ve heard that teething can start that early. . .that’s tough when you’re still breastfeeding and they have teeth. I wish I could provide some solutions but my son was the complete opposite. . .he didn’t get his first tooth until probably a week or two before his first birthday!! He’s eight years old now and lost his first tooth this summer!

Since this is not totally uncommon I’m sure you’ll find some good resources! Good luck!

  3. My little guy starting teething about 4 months, which was just about the time that I stopped nursing. Those freezer rings helped him alot, bagels that have been refrigerated (trick my NY grandmother taught me), and a little Tylenol for the rough nights. Good luck and I hope it’s a speedy journey for all!

  4. WOW! That’s is early, then again each baby has their own timetable, my girls didnt cut any theeth until after their first bday, it was like “oh I’m 1 time to make teeth” by then I was done breathfeeding, the only bad part was that they were walking and picking stuff and in the mouth it goes so that was hard, thank God we didnt experience any of the sickness just a lotta drool and occasionally eating unsanitary things.

  5. Oh, the “drool monster, how I remember thee. So funny, this is exactly what we called our first. And we used to say he had industrial drool. It could ruin remote controls, that drool. And like you said, bibs? Ha, his drool laughed at bibs. All I can say is this too shall pass. Although, he’s 9 nine and still a little juicy-moutheded, O_o! LOL!!

  6. Yes girl! A friend tells me that its too early but I read the same thing. Even though I haven’t seen a tooth yet, it’s clear he gets relief from rubbing his gums. I think it will eventually work telling him no bitting. lol I actually screamed out loud one time in pain and it made my son cry. They will understand soon.

But what a cute shirt to go with that cute face!

  7. Sounds like what my baby was doing around the same time but he’s 7 months now and continues to do the same thing with no teeth in sight. LOL. The nipple gnawing is no fun at all. My baby does it then looks up at me and giggles. It’s so hard not to smile but I don’t want to reinforce that very painful behavior. Good luck

  8. Oh just remembering teething and nursing, and the pain! Oh man the pain. I tried my best to freeze a teething toy before she nursed so that the itchiness in her mouth wouldn’t affect nursing time, but that always didn’t work.

  9. She bit me a few times. I learned to watch the cues of when she wasn’t actively sucking and I would unlatch her. I can’t believe he is old enough to teethe already. This is mind blowing.

  10. Moo and JJ both started teething during that 3-4 month period. It seems early but when you look at the fact that you can start introducing them to some foods and other liquids as soon as 4 months it makes sense. And yes, those gums can hurt. You’re doing good to break the suction and tell him no biting. It may seem like he’s not getting now but if you keep doing it he’ll learn what you’re saying.

    Love the new blog look!

  11. My oldest started teething at 4 months and the youngest 6 months. Freeze pops!! We bought sugar free freeze pops and later start making our own. You can use any kind of baby juice, dilute with water, use snack size ziploc bags. Pour the juice lay flat in your freezer and you are ready to go. I would them in half. Give them half and the the other in the freezer. This gave them something to suck on and it numbed the gums as well. This was better than using baby orajel which I don’t recommend. Good Luck our boys are now 9 and 6.

  12. Hi Dani, I just came upon your blog through your sig on the Long Hair Care Forum. Your son Rohan is SO CUTE! I am assuming that you took his name from the Lord of the Rings trilogy? :) Cool! I remember coming across an ad in a magazine a few years ago about a BPA free teether made of food-grade silicone called the “RaZberry”. A quick Google search turned up some vendors including Babies”R”Us and below are links to the official RaZbaby store:
    Red:
    https://www.myrazbaby.com/index.php?plugin=Products&id=17&title=razberry-red-teether

    Blue:
    https://www.myrazbaby.com/index.php?plugin=Products&id=18&title=razberry-blue-teether

Aren’t they lovely? I’ll also link you below to the Babies”R”Us website and Amazon.com so that you may read other’s reviews:

I wish you well on your journey, teething and otherwise lol, as Rohan grows into a strong healthy boy, with many years of new experiences (great/fun/wonderful, difficult and everywhere in between) ahead of all three of you yet to come. When you will look back, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but ultimately those will be unique memories that belong to YOU and that no one else will ever be able to duplicate or take away. Cheers to personal and spiritual growth! :)
I wish you and your family well, have a great upcoming holiday season!
    Regards

    • Thanks!!!
LOL I didn’t name my child after that. I’ve never read or seen those movies. Rohan’s a Sanskrit word for ascension or to ascend. I think Tolkien and I looked at the same books for inspiration.
