While I was in Florida I saw that two baby products were recalled. The Bumbo baby seat and the Summer Infant baby bather.
We own and use both products. We are continuing to own and use both products!
They are both being recalled for repair because babies are suffering injuries after falling out of them while on an elevated surface.
Compassionate and Understanding Dani feels bad for the parents of these babies who must be so upset, and sorry for the babies who got hurt. It’s terrible. Scary things happen in just a blink of an eye, you never know what will go down.
Judgey Dani says WTF are you putting your bumbo seat in a place that your child could fall from? If you’re not going to watch him like a hawk, put him somewhere that he cannot hurt himself! DUH. And as for the baby bather, why would you turn away from a squirmy wet infant for a second? And why would you lift the baby IN the seat? Put the seat in the sink or tub and then put the baby in it? Is that not common sense? Is that not the normal modus operandi?! (did I use modus operandi correctly in that sentence? lol)
::sigh::
Before being a mom I’d hear all these recalls and be upset with the manufacturer immediately. It wasn’t until I actually read these reports or listened to the news and the claims of the parents that I realized it’s often user error that causes the unfortunate accidents. (Not always, but often.)
I really hope these kids who suffered the falls have no irreparable damage, and I hope the parents keep more watchful eyes going forward, and I truly hope the companies make more fool proof products in the future.
I’ve noticed myself being more vigilant about things around Sharkie now. Before if I’d put him sitting on the couch or middle of the bed while I ran for a burp cloth or something I wouldn’t have to worry about what’s around him because he was stationary. But now that he’s a scooty squirmer and can roll over, I have to see what’s in two roll’s worth of distance away from him…even though it takes him like 50 million years to roll over and I know I’ll be back before he gets anywhere.
I guess that’s just normal mom behavior, right.
But oh my god…worst mom moment ever…Rohan was 3 weeks and I put him to bed on my bed, in the middle of a king sized bed mind you, and then surrounded him with 4 pillows like a buffer. I went to check on him and he was AWAKE, and had scooted out of the pillow buffer up near the head of the bed!! At this point I didn’t know he could even scoot! I grabbed him up and started crying ugly tears of bad motherhood and thanking God that I checked on him when I did. I remember shrieking at John “what if I didn’t check on him?! WHAT IF I DIDN’T CHECK ON HIM?!” Images of a broken skulled baby were swirling in my head.
UGH!
Anywaaaaay… At BlogHer 12 I met a women who was representing a company called SafetyBook and they are consistently updated with recalls. Apparently the recalls we hear about on the news is only a teeny fraction of all the recalls happening on products every day. Scary. With SafetyBook you can enter the products you have and be sure there are no recalls on them. Very useful for a mom with all the billions of baby products we buy or are given. Check em out!
(and no, this post isn’t sponsored by SafteyBook or anything…though I wish it was. haha)
Do you have the bumbo seat or the summer infant baby bather? Have you had any products that were recalled? What did you do?

I own and love the bumbo seat. We too…continue to use it. I agree that recalls these days are to be blamed on the parent…not the manufacturer. It seems a lot of parents are using these products as actual babysitters for their kids rather than aids as they interact with them. ugh…I feel ya though.
Thanks for the recall link…that helps a lot!
Okay so I’m clearly not the only one that feels this way with the Bumbo seat. I submitted my info to get the belt for the recall because I wanted to see what it was about. Its a safety belt for the seat, however, if you put the child in the seat in an unsafe place they can still fall and hurt themselves! So this is more of a common sense recall for parents…watch where you are putting your child!!!!

smh this bumbo seat recall is so damn dumb. Nothing is wrong with that seat. It works great and when my baby was small she loved that thing. I even passed her’s down to a friends baby for him to use.

I have a friend who is getting it despite the recall. I saw all the youtube videos of the mishaps. Why in the world people actually videotaped their kids falling out of this thing I have no idea. Although none of the videos I saw were on slanted surfaces, all the babies were on the floor. But I have to agree any place you put your baby they should be monitored.
I bet they recorded it so they have “proof” when they go try to sue bumbo for that $$$$$$
I do think a lot recalls happen because of user error when it comes to baby products. Parents have to use common sense and it seems like a lot of parents have found a way to get around not using common sense by blaming companies for making faulty products. There’s never going to be a completely safe place to leave your child unattended which why we have to be watchful of them.
I do feel for the children who suffered injuries and like you hope that they all have since recovered 100%. I also hope that their parents will be more careful about leaving them unattended. It only takes a second for kids to get into stuff or take a fall.

He is such a cutie! I’m glad that you checked on him when you did. So scary.
I have the bumbo and we used it a lot. We used to put him in it a lot on the table (high surface) so he could “eat dinner with us.” This was before he started solid food or could fit in a high chair. We also supervised him in and he never fell out. I’m kind of an anxious mess (but getting better) when it comes to my baby’s safety and providing proper supervision. Sometime I’ll forget my baby’s towel during bath and I just take off my shirt and wrap him in it but never leave him unattended, especially in the bath. I’m not judging the other parents though because crap happens.

You are too funny, and so right. A lot of these baby products that go wrong could be because of user error. I loved these seats. They used it Princess’s daycare and she was totally fine. Some of them even come with straps to prevent the babies from falling out. At the end of the day, you have to be vigilant.

I have both those items too and love them. I didn’t realize the infant bather was on recall, but I did hear about the bumbo recall. I’m going to continue using both items and as always continue to remain vigilant when my little love bug is in either item!
