What They Don’t Say: Post-Partum Life

Maaaaan you guys have been keeping secrets from me!

This is probably going to end up being a post series at random, because I feel like I keep discovering new aspects of postpartum life that nobody ever told me about!

Liiiike:

**If you’re squeamish or easily grossed out, that’ll go away. I was worried about this because even with my lil brother I was gagging as I cleaned him up and couldn’t stand anything smelly or squishy. With Sharkie I dunno what happened, I’m like queen of the poop/barf/pee/drool and it doesn’t phase me one bit.

**Postpartum depression is not necessarily what you read in the books and on websites. I could check “No” to all the criteria on one of those postpartum depression checklists but I KNOW I had some kinda yucky thing going on. (I’ll post fully on that later)

**You hear how your hair may shed like crazy a couple months post-partum, but you don’t hear how your hair texture may completely change! I have straight hair at the roots now and it blows. (Pics are here) I look like I’m growing out a curly perm. FML

**You will miss being pregnant sometimes. I never heard this until recently, and now am going through it. It comes on just once in a while, but I miss having my lil embry inside. It was nice having a big belly for a good cause.

**Your body chemistry (for lack of a better term) can change drastically. I can’t handle dairy products anymore. I didn’t know you could become lactose intolerant or lactose sensitive post pregnancy!

Did you have any weird postpartum changes or notice anything different that you didn’t hear about beforehand?

  1. Don’t worry lactose intolerance happens as most people age anyway and black people are more prone to lactose intolerance so it may have happened anyway. Sorry about the depression, hope it wasn’t anything to severe. And just wow about the hair. My hair is thicker now, it’ll be interesting to see how it will be after.

  2. OMG!! After I had my last baby I sweat so much. I’ll spare the details but geesh. Its like my internal body thermostat went haywire. Just awful

  3. I shed hair like a dog! My skin is different… like none of my skin products work like they used too. On top of that, my skin is always dry!! I can’t stand that! I can’t remember the last time I painted my nails… I’d rather play with Avery…or clip his. haha.

  4. Yup, no one told me either. I thought it was just me! I cannot tolerate wheat like before. My hair thinned. And I had the same thing with the internal thermostat going wild. I had no idea about the hormonal/body changes. Now I wonder when you have more babies do you get more changes each time.

  5. For one, my hair changed. It changed from curly at my crown to straight and it just looked completely different. Now it’s back to it’s original texture since going natural.

I suffered from postpartum depression and it was just something that I dealt with without medication or going to a doctor. In all honesty, I wish I would have talked to someone about it instead of holding everything in.

  6. Yup, my hair changed for sure. After shedding (which is horrible if you have locs–all the shedding just makes the lock thicker in ONE spot). Everyone experiences the changes differently. At least it wasn’t like when I was in the hospital–that picture could describe exactly how I felt.

I was that way with my first niece and I’m typically VERY squeamish. And my sister used cloth diapers with her. I was so desensitized. Wonder how I would be now days? Although, I think it’s just love. For love, you do whatever. :)

  8. I definitely went through ppd with my firstborn, it was weird though I didn’t know it until much later.

  9. You should’ve done a link up for this because I could write an entire post, my body chemistry is off (sweating, deodorant that I used FOREVER just stopped working) I wont go into major details but you get the picture! I am like Mimi…my body temperature is always on HOT! LOL! My hair was shedding until I cut it off (I was in between textures (natural/permed) anyways but it just got worse)!!!

  10. I also had a sensitivity to lactose in the beginning and so did Princess. I actually became gluten and dairy free. She became very gassy, if I had dairy. As for the hair, mine grew like weeds during the pregnancy and right afterwards. But, after about a year my hair fell out pretty bad. It’s finally starting to grow back. I breastfed and starting losing nutrients, as a result. Stupid me stopped taking prenatal vitamins. Getting back on was my saving grace.

This is the first time I’m hearing about pregnancy changing the texture of your hair. Please keep us updated on that. It’s sounds interesting.

I agree with the PPD business and I still miss being pregnant and its almost been a year!

  12. My hair completely changed textures too. I dealt with it by chopping it all off and growing locs. LOL
