Adventures in Babywearing: Volume 1

Ever since finding out I was preggo I thought I’d be wearing my baby in a carrier, versus pushing him in a stroller, but I didn’t picture myself wearing him around the house until a little while ago.  Babywearing is so convenient and great for a touchyfeely, semi-attachment parenting mom like me who just wants to snuggle her little bundle all the time.  As soon as Rohan hit 8lbs I was ready to pop him into a carrier instead of carrying him around looseygoosey in my arms.  We have a wrap style carrier, and a soft structured style carrier and he seems to enjoy them both.

I didn’t know what a rarity babywearing was! I thought it was more mainstream but I guess it’s not. We get stared at whenever we’re in public (and here I thought it was just because of our striking beauty lol) and several people have come up to me to ask questions about the carriers. I’m happy to share what little I know with them.

Wearing Roey lets me get most of my “upright” chores done around the house and happily lulls him to sleep. It also lets me sniff his awesome smelling head (it’s like crack!) whenever I want to throughout the day. John and I even take him to the jogging track in it. (we switch off walking with him and jogging without him)

Our wrap carrier is a Moby and after my first million failed attempts at getting it on correctly, I finally got it! And now I love it! It was a friendly commenter here that suggested I look at “real moms” on youtube to see how to wear it, and it totally worked.  So thank you From Mrs to Mom! My only negative about this carrier is that I have to put it on in advance before going out. I can’t put it on or adjust it while I’m outside the house or the ends will drag on the filthy ground. This makes handing him over to daddy impossible while we’re in a store or something. No spontaneity whatsoever.

The soft sided carrier we have is the Ergobaby Performance. This carrier is awesome because it adjusts to my size and John’s size quickly and we can get Rohan in and out easily no matter where we are. John feels more comfortable wearing this carrier, it’s definitely more male friendly since it looks like a backpack, versus a piece of fabric. Rohan tolerates getting into this carrier slightly less than our Moby, but once he’s in, he’s a happy camper. It’s easy to adjust while wearing it too.

Both carriers are light and comfortable, and feel very secure.  They’re so freeing and help me be a bit more productive during the day. The only thing I cannot do in them is bend over without supporting Sharkie with my hand. If I want to sit and write or prep food, the Moby wins out over the more bulky feel of the Ergobaby.

I was considering getting a sling style carrier, but now that John and I are so comfortable in these, it’s not necessary. I read that you can breastfeed in the Moby so I will try that out soon. So far, loving the whole babywearing experience.

Do you wear your baby? What reactions did you receive? What style carrier do you have? Does your partner wear your little one too? Any babywearing tips for me?

  1. I used to wear my baby until he became to heavy for my back. I don’t have one of those however, I have a bjorn. Its super easy to use and snap baby in and out of. Those pics are too cute, I love the closeness and the bonding part of the slings.

  2. I love our boba carrier. It makes doing chores inside and outside of the house soooo much easier! I still need to figure out my moby wrap. lol. He’s going to outgrow it soon! This was a great review. Once I figure out mine I’ll post something too. :)
p.s. you’re looking AMAZING!! Keep up whatever it is you’re doing!

  3. Awww I love how you are gazing at each other! Babywearing is the best, isn’t it? We loved the Moby at first especially for DH b/c he’s 6’8″ and the structured carriers are too small for his frame. I now use a Boba I adore it – I didn’t start using it until my now almost-2 year old was 16 months but she loves it and we’ll still get a lot of use out of it because it goes to 45 lbs. She has a loooong way to go to get there but by that time she better be able to keep up with me when we’re out and about. LOL!

People don’t stare when I wear my daughter and I see so many others wearing their kids but when I was in Nigeria with her for a couple weeks to see family they did because they don’t use fancy carriers there. They just strap their kids in with a cloth so I looked funny walking around with my daughter in a “backpack.”

  4. How do u put rohans legs n the ergo? Isn’t he too small 4 them 2 straddle? I have an ergo but haven’t used it b/c of this.

    • Yeah he doesn’t straddle, he’s sitting inside.. “indian” style kinda…fetal position kinda… KWIM? His legs are up against me, and his butt is in the seat bit of the carrier. Am I makin sense?

      • Oh indian style! Ill try that..I was trying froggy style but his feet seemed out of position..thx! I also have a chicco for now but its uncomfortable for long periods..no back support.

  5. Up until about 2 months ago, I used the carrier around the house to get chores done. When my baby was itty bitty, I used a sling that allowed me to breastfeed. I did get some weird reactions with the sling and breastfeeding at the pediatricians office. I thought that was unusual.

  6. So sweet. I love wearing our baby. We (well I) used the Moby wrap even before our baby was 8lbs (b/c I didn’t read the directions). LOL. It was all good though. When he got older we used the Baby Bjorn (which we still use). Hubby uses it too. Our whole family loves the wrap. People did look at me curiously even in Chapel Hill, NC where we live. They are all about attachment parenting around here.

    • I think the 8lb limit is just for Moby’s legal safety. Tiny babies can be worn safely as long as they have space to breathe.

The hubby and I were just talking About this….he seems to be more excited about this than I am but we want to wait for baby to get here to get one…hopefully that’s advisable!! He looks as happy as can be!!

    • Do what’s best for you. It was actually recommended to me that I wait for baby to arrive before buying a carrier. I didn’t listen.

  8. I loved babywearing. It was great. No stroller to pack & unpack. And I enjoyed the closeness and ease of being able to breastfeed.

  9. Aww I miss wearing my snickerdoodle in the newborn hold. He started trying to “jump” in it around 3 months, so now I leave his little feet out. I get a lot of looks in certain neighborhoods when I wear him, but every now and then when we’re in Target there’s another mom babywearing and I get a smile. I’ve had lots of women ask me about it and I hope they’ll try wearing their babies too.

  10. I used to wear Zee all the time when she was little. It was easy to carry her around and do the stuff around the house that needed to be done.

Its a shame that people don’t really think of baby wearing as something that should be common, but you will get stares and looks out there. At the end of the day, you do what feels right for you and your family.
